Where did you get it?
It could be a church token or some religious token that replaced money in an offering.

The most commonly encountered class of "religious token" with verses of scripture on them are "communion tokens". These were used in churches (mainly of the Presbyterian / Church of Scotland denomination) where only members were permitted to take communion. As I understand the practice, the pastor would visit the members before the communion service and give out the tokens. On attendance, anyone without a token would be denied entry. The tokens get a brief mention on this Wikipedia page; this website has more information and examples.

However, communion tokens usually carry verses specifically relating to communion eg. "do this in remembrance of me". I don't know if this particular token / medal is part of this series or not.

I wqould call it a religious pocket piece- not a communion token- probably 1840-1890 based on the writing style.
