I bought this as an NGC problem coin to start adding coins to my half eagle roll. Only paid $20 over melt, but it was way better than expected! Grade opinions?

Its been dipped, but not abrasively cleaned IMO. The wing does not have much wear; these are hard to grade but it helps. I'd say 53-55 detail.

I'm not seeing the "problem".

This looks way better than the 1915... I can't even imagine a roll of half-eagles...

Very attractive! Hope you're keeping it out of the roll!
For the most part the hairlines seem due to circulation, though there might be a few area(12:00 and 6:00 on the obverse, 3:00 on the reverse) that I'd have to see in person. Those areas could just be catching the light poorly though in the photo - can you confirm?
Also, I must say that even though I just joined, I'm already amazed by your finds!

you cracked this out right? What did it say on the holder? Details or something? How many do you have for your roll at the moment?

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I bought this off of ebay in an NGC AU detail "improperly cleaned" holder. The single picture wasnt good, but the price was right. I was expecting harsh cleaning, but I was surprised when it arrived that it was actually very nice. I have owned about a dozen problem free certified AU incuse indians in my life, and this one doesn't look any differnt. A few scattered hairlines, but the surfaces look good to me with some remaining luster. I did crack it out to put in my roll, but I'm considering resubmitting it. It's not as nice as my type example, but it would make a good type coin.

I don't see the problem, either. Looks like a lightly-circulated coin with original color. I don't think I'd invest another grading fee. Just put it in that roll as planned!
How many half eagles go in a roll, anyway?

NGC can be really tough on "problem" coins...good for the buyer but bad for the seller at times. Anyways, since the half eagle fits into nickel rolls and is about the same size, I would call 40 coins a roll(in other words approx 10 ounces of gold!). I've wanted a 10 ounce gold bar forever, but I recently figured that once you have them in a roll, it would feel pretty much the same as a bar, right? And be a lot cooler to look at and more divisible if/when I sell. It will be fun to feel the changing weight of it as it grows. I hope gold goes down a bit to cut me some slack..lol.
