Wasn't sure where to post this. We acquired this little piece from an estate sale and cannot quite figure out its value. Sorry I have no pic. It is about 3/8 of an inch octagonal and has a bear on one side with some flowers and the 1/4 with the words California Gold, the other side has an Indian Head with stars around it and the year 1855. Any help or direction to lead to the vaule of this little piece would be much appreciated. Thank you!

This sounds like a typically modern replica which there are several types and dates.. Here is a link from the forum on the same topic:

Sorry but any alleged Cal gold depicting a bear is a modern reproduction, gold content would be limited to a thin plating.

There's some telling info on these "California Gold tokens" in the Red Book aka "Guide Book of U.S. Coins." Look under California in the index to locate the page in any edition.

As a novelty item, conversation piece, these are maybe worth fifty cents, apiece. I've personally seen folks bid over $200, each, for these at antique auctions. They're not gold and tend to date from the 1960-70's. They're a modern version, so to speak, of "fool's gold."
