I graded this one F-12 due to the discoloration, and wear; however, it is a variety coin, and I thought some of you might be interested in seeing it. Since I began participating in this forum, I've become interested in the different varieties, and errors that are specific to the Morgan dollars, and, yep, I ordered a Morgan RedBook, and Top 100 VAM book - haven't gotten them yet, but they're on the way. I like it. IMO the grade is spot-on, unfortunately obverse-limited because the reverse is 20 or 25. I won't attempt the variety, as I'm sworn off 1878's until I get rich enough to try to collect them all.

What really caught my eye about this coin is the area under the feathers. I have never seen this one before.... Is this an VAM? or maybe an undiscovered one? I cannot find it listed anywhere.... Unless this coin had some weird rotated die, the only thing there would be a clashed E that I have ever seen. There also appears to be some doubling of the 3rd feather from the left. Help me here experts.... MM

Morganman - I wish it were, but it's nothing more than a scratch. As for the doubling, I can't see it under magnification, so it must be a result of the scan.

Here we go again. Slowly I'm learning that if my Dad had more than one coin of the same date, it's not just an extra, but he noticed something different about each one. I know about rev of 78 and rev of 79 but what is a 3rd rev? Is there something specific that makes it a 3rd rev?

Look at the top feather of the arrows. See it is at an angle instead of straight..... MM Also, it has been posted here before, but I will post link again. Greatest place to do VAM research I have found http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/Morgan+VAMs+By+Date

OK Ralph, lets see if my thinking cap is on straight. 8tf would be 1 rev. Long flat top arrow feather would 2nd rev. Short top arrow feather would be 3rd rev. Makeing 3rd rev and rev of 79 the same.

stmpcol - Second reverse and reverse of 78 are one and the same - parallel top arrow feather, concave breast - third reverse and reverse of 79 are identical - slanted top arrow feather, convex breast. At least, that's my understanding. If that's incorrect, I would appreciate someone straightening me out on it.
