Does heating a zinc LMC make it larger? It is dull gray in color, 2.5 grams and larger in diameter than a normal cent. It appears that the copper coating has been removed, but that doesn't explain why it is larger in diameter. The last picture shows how much larger, it is even on the opposite side of the photo.

I read somewhere on this forum that if you take a zinc cent, place it between a couple layers of leather, and pound it with a hammer, that the result is what you are showing. The pounding thins and widens the coin, causing the copper layer to come off. I've never tried it, but it makes sense to me.

It's interesting, but certainly a damaged coin, not a collectible one. Heat does do crazy things to zinc cents, the metal has such a low melting point. It's strange that the cent doesn't seem to have distortion in it's details with an enlarged diameter. From you photos though, it's unquestionably been altered since having left the mint.
