Hello, I pulled this 1938p from a box yesterday and was wondering what you guys think its grade might be. I'm guessing MS62, would that be correct? Thanks!

Jeffersons are tough for me to grade, with variable strike
characteristics throughout the years and what not. The high spots on
the reverse seem to be intact and the fields are nice, I'm not sure if
that is rub on the brow but I'm inclined to agree with low MS.

My opinions ....

The 1938 Jefferson was not known as a notorious weak strike issue (see for example the 1953-S)... Q. David Bowers estimates that 1 in 20 MS coins are Full-Step ... about an average amount of FS coins for the series .... so I am going to associate the lack of detail in your coin with actual wear versus strike weakness.

I say this coin will grade XF45 ... maybe AU50 if it has any remaining mint luster. The obverse rim damage at 9:00 and reverse rim damage at 5:30 would most likely get this coin a 'details' grade at a top tier TPG.

Can't determine the luster by your photos XOG ... you need to judge that for us.

Great coin for a roll-find .... would be an upgrade for me.

David
