The story:

My younger brother and I happened to end up in Seattle on a couple different trips in 2010. Bought a couple tickets to the Seattle Mariners baseball games (general admin - yeah...somewhere in the bleachers). So, other than a box seat behind homeplate, THE best seats in the house are in left/center field, next to the bull pens...also known as the "beer gardens".

Patrick asked me what else have I been doing lately. Explained to him that I have started to work on finishing my Lincoln Wheatback penny collection. Couple of gentelmen overheard the conversation and gave me this coin. They were on shore leave from the USS Abraham Lincoln and both were pilots. One was nearing the end of his career and the other was about in the middle. Needless to say, I thanked them profusely and offered to buy them a refreshment. Kind of cool. If I ever build a "coin cabinet" to display my Lincoln Cent collection in, this would be the centerpiece. Enjoy.

That's a pretty cool piece and a great story.

But, what is it?

Neat story, thanks for sharing! I couldn't find any information on the token but it was interesting to spend a little time reading about the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Blunted - you got that right.

Definitely appreciated being coined by somebody that served on the USS Abe.

Yep, a challenge coin for the USS Abraham Lincoln and much nicer than most I have seen. I love how they incorporated the wheat ears

I was in the Navy on board the USS Boxer LPH during the Vietnam era. Good thing they never made a coin of the ship. Who would want one with boxer shorts on it.

biokemist6 - do you think there was a fellow numismatist involved in the design? Interesting...

This is NOT a "coin" but a medal.

This medal has a well-executed design with artistic, fine relief. It has cross-appeal for a variety of collectors ... ships, Lincoln, military. Is there anything on the edge, or is it plain? Neat item and a fine story to go along with it.

Exoguy - this is not a medal, as it is not an award. More like a token for being on the ship. Is not truly a challenge coin either, as this does not specify rank, company, battalion, etc.

Just the company that minted the toke is on the edge - nwtmint.
