It's a large date. The 1, 9 & 0 are level with each other while the 7 is lower. Also the letters E and TY in liberty are usually pretty weak compared to the other letters on small date. Somebody told me once though that sometimes the E and TY are also weak on the large date, so go figure. Hope this helps.

The photo of the 7 is a great size, it allows you to clearly see one of the diagnostics. There is a crease at the junction of the crossbar and upright on the 7, a Small Date does not have this crease.

Once you have a small date, the difference will be obvious. Try to buy a nice one for your collection as a reference.

i agree with the duke.... I have about 70 1970 s coins from circulation, and I kept thinking several were small dates. then I bought one on ebay and I know for sure none of mine were small dates. I think the most obvious part is the curled 9.

The real small dates are plainly obvious in-hand. I looked for 15 years (near the SF mint), but always thought I had one "maybe"--but there's no doubt when you see a real one.

Very cool... I've been saving my S mints here and havent been paying any attention. It's very similar to the WAM's... once you see one you KNOW that its a WAM. All the others are just optical illusions of wanting a WAM.
