I appologise for jumping in on your thread here Penny Lover.
However stumbled across this one in some world coins I was given over the weekend 1987 D
I was also given a copy of the 2003 Red Book, which I'm still checking out.
Hope the pic is ok, have a look at the top of the T in United.
Is this a common type of error for that year

No apology necessary I don't know if I can help you much I'm still learning myself. I think that is a common error but not necesserily that year. You might start a new thread and I'm sure somebody her can tell you more about what the error is then I could.
Have a nice day and God Bless!

Not partial to starting threads, the reason behind jumping on yours was still trying to learn about the AM, A M varities.
The 1987 D also has a gap as well as doubling in the middle of the building, and the T in United.

What I have found out so far about the AM is that any date before 1992 should be Open.( There was also a 1992 Found Closed should be Open)and any date after 1992 should be closed, except for the dates 1998,1999 and 2000 which have been found to be open. Here are 2 links that might help. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/...arieties.htm
and this link is about the 1992 its at the bottom http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/
I hope they help.
Have a great day and God Bless!
