I've been meaning to get this on here for a few weeks now. it looks like an ink transfer but the bill feels waxy. is this something someone did to the bill? I can't think of an reason why it would feel waxy besides someone trying to alter it.

My "guess" might be that this note has been previously soaked in vegetable oil or something similar, and the waxy texture may be a residual effect? It really does not appear to be an ink transfer to me as the effect seems to be the same on both sides..... totally unrelated, but check out this auction..... I thought at first this was some sort of postage scam, but $5 from Pakistan might be a bargain.

If the note came in contact with something that is making it feel like that I would guess that what you are seeing isn't an ink transfer but rather it made the paper translucent and so you are seeing the other side through the paper. That would explain why the effect is seen on both sides of the note.

But of course that is just a guess.
Rest in Peace

I agree with nickelman. something like they use on stamps to show watermarks, except that evaporates.

Yeah, I've actually come across a few like this, all with a waxy texture, but this one was by far the most translucent. I don't know anything about photography but I thought maybe someone put it into that stuff they use in dark rooms to develop film, haha.

You may be right on with that kaylem...... I imagine that dropping the note into a developer bath might produce these effects.

I have seen older notes like this. The only thing I was able to determine / understand was that it was environmental damage aka PVC currency sleeves. After a while they turn greenish and leave a oily waxy residue on the note.

edit - typo

I could buy into that notion very easily Ceylon, I like it.... however, this particular note does not really fit the profile of something that would have been held in a sleeve for an extended period of time.

Personally I think someone just spilled oil on it. I have had a few like that and eventually the oily feeling somewhat goes away leaving a note that looks like this one does.
