Hello All,
I have an older friend that bought a complete set of these 1908D-1929. Most are MS 63-64(including 1908D) a couple MS61. I fear he over payed for the set but in any event now is looking to sell them. It would be appreciated if anyone could share their opinions of value based on retail and wholesale pricing.
Thank you for your help.

with gold on the rise, if he bought them over 5 years ago he can hopefully make money on them even if he over paid a little when he bought them. I have a few questions, when ytou state grades are these coins graded by a third party grader at those grades or are those the grades you believe they are? If they are graded by a TPG which one is it? These questions will have to be answered before we can help with value

Thank you for your help. I was under the impression the 1908 was rare. However, was told it is the 1911D, MS - 61. Some were graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., some list PCGS. As you can tell I have no knowledge on the subject, just trying to help someone out.
Thanks again

Good! PCGS and NGC are the top 2 grading companys! The 11-d IS by far the rarest date, and it alone certified by one of those 2 in MS-61 is about $10,000 or so.

He bought them from a coin dealer in TX. Paid over $40,000 for the set. What little research I have done makes me think he paid way too much and will not get his original investment back.

Probably did over-pay IMHO. Even at those certified grades, you could probably pull a collection like that for around $20,000. This is ballpark though. Some of the guys on here who are watching gold closer might be able to give you a better value. Plus actual grades of the 1911 D, and 1914 could swing that some.

If he were to get them all graded, and they all came back at MS63, the common ones would be worth $800-1000 while the 11-d could go from $15,000 to $20,000. An NGC MS62 recently sold for $12,000 on ebay. The 1914 in MS63 may pull in $3-4,000. I'd say he'd be lucky to get $30,000 for the whole set, and that's not taking into account grading fees for all the coins.

I just saw today that a complete set of !908-1929 Quarter Eagles all in NGC MS61 sold for $18,500. If most of them are in MS63 and MS64 he may have paid pretty well in line with the current value that others with deep pockets are willing to pay. It would certainly be fun to spend some time with the magnifier on his purchase! There is a company in Orlando called Numismatic Financial Corporation. He can reach them at NFCCoins.com. They sell tons of high grade Indian Quarter Eagles and are very nice people to work with. I'm sure they would be a great resource for him.
