This is another addition to my collection After doing a little research I believe this is a "Pillar Coin". Again any info would be appreciated. Thanks again everyone.

This is a Pillar Reales, of 8 reales, minted in Mexico under the reign of Carolus III in 1767 for the kingdom of Spain.
Do you have the exact weight of the coin ? There are many fakes circulating in this serie (this one looks fine though - although swamperbob would tell you for sure it is ok)

I like the look of this one but that says nothing about its authenticity. Measuring the precise weight to the nearest 0.1 gram will be important and if you can take a clear picture of the edge of the coin that will be helpful. You can also check the coin with a magnet to make sure it's not a steel fake. Like MathieuMa says, resident authority Swamperbob can provide an expert opinion. Hopefully he'll chime in soon.

The scale that I have says it weighs 27 grams. It is not magnetic. The edge reminds me of a braid.

Can you check the edge, the pattern should overlap in two places - at the exact opposite of the coin. The coin was pressed between two pieces of hard metal - fakes often don't have this design.
Your coin looks great, you should have a great genuine pillar dollar :)

Sorry MathieuMa, but I am a novice to collecting. Not sure what you mean by the pattern overlapping at exact opposite

Sorry but here comes the wet blanket - perhaps. The people who have commented that this is a heavily forged series are 100% correct. Just in the past 220 days, my records indicate over 1/2 of the Pillar 8Rs appearing on ebay were forgeries or highly suspect. There are two features on the faces of the coin that need explanation. First over the assayer initial M on the shield side there is a V shaped check mark on it's side. Is that a scratch cut INTO the surface or raised lines (in metal) above the surface? Second, to the Right side of the crown on the Dos Mundos side there appears to be a shadow that could point to a fold in the die surface. Is that a feature on the coin or simple color distortion? I am asking because just a few weeks ago I received a remarkably similar coin for authentication that turned out to have a Specific Gravity of 10.08 (770 fine silver). It was a modern forgery struck from dies created by casting. This techniques often results in a wavy field and copies scratches as raised line segments. If the scratch over the letter M is raised you have a forgery. Someone mentioned the edge overlaps in this series. You should go through similar topics on the forum where I have discussed proper edging techniques. A brief summary is that originals of this coin were EDGED before they were struck. The machine used was a two die Flat Bar parallel edging mill. The coin blank was squeezed between two dies under high pressure and the edge design was cut into opposite sides as the blank rolled between the two dies. The blank made 1/2 revolution to be fully edged. There are two points OPPOSITE one another where this process started and stopped. These overlaps MUST be opposite and they MUST be the same length on BOTH SIDES. I am a bit suspicious this coin was edged AFTER it was struck because of the way the light reflects off the dentils at the edge. The Specific Gravity of this coin to be real HAS TO BE about 10.30. See discussions on how to do a Specific Gravity test and invest in a good scale before you spend a lot of money on counterfeits.

At the worst, if it's not a real 8 Real, it's a real nice counterfeit of a real 8 Real.

The mark over the letter M is a scratch. On the right side of the crown there is a line, also feel like a scratch that does not appear to be through the edge of the crown. The mark above the scratch is a feature of the coin.

If the lines are actually scratches and look good under magnification - then the coin may be real. However, I would do a confirming SG before submitting it for third party authentication. Without a top tier TPG I would NOT accept it as real.

Thank you for all your help swamperbob. I hope to get to the York, Pa. show this Saturday to share what I have and get some information on this coin and some others. Thanks again.
