A coworker of mine that once made fun of my numismaticness has now asked for my help. Looking for some info on this note.

Is it authentic? Serial # 40679
Based on it's poor condition does it have any value?

Thanks!

While the note looks good, and would be worth about $20-$30 if genuine...... serial # 40679 is a known fake.

Back when I collected Obsolete, Broken Bank,Southern State and Confederate Currency (wish I had that collection now), I would say that about 98% of the Confederate Notes had the serial numbers and signatures in brown ink, the other 2% was in red ink (this was mostly true for Broken-Bank Notes also)... To my knowledge, Signatures in black ink are more than likely reprints...

Go to the crutchwilliams bogus notes list, click on the linkified number 40679 under $10 1864, and you'll see that this particular replica is even honest about being such - it has "FACSIMILIE" in tiny letters at the bottom left on the back.

aren't all the designs supposed to be the same on the notes made in the same place?

mine is the same date, made in the same place, but its genuine, compare them.

Right you are Adam... that just shows how familiar (or not) I am with Confederate notes... I never even bothered to look at GO's reverse image.
