Anyone know why the "no cents" nickel is worth less than the "cents" when they made 1/3 the amount of the "no cents"?

Simple- hoarding. No Cent nickels were saved in large numbers and even though their mintage was significantly less, the surviving numbers are much higher compared to the Cents type.

I would suspect it is an issue with survival. That is, there are more survivors (in all grades) of the "no cents" variety than there are for the "cents" variety for that first year. That is, with all its notoriety, more people were inclined to hold on to them than the more common "cents" variety (which includes all years, not just the first year).

I agree and just wanted to add, that the 1883 No cents nickel is one of the cheapest (if not the cheapest) Liberty nickels that can be bought in an uncirculated grade.

It is the cheapest, and I had no idea that the mintage was that low....but makes sense. High grade examples of 1892 Barber coins are often easier to find than other dates because people hoarded the first date of many series in higher grades.

Good call on that... Wish the 1909 VDB S was the same... well... I suppose no one would really want one then?

It is. The SVDB has a much higher survival rate and in much higher grade than you would normally expect. The SVDB is not rare, just expensive because of the very large number of Lincoln Cent collectors.

BU rolls of 1883 no cents Lib nickels were available as recently as the 1960s.

There were rolls of them sold in the Eliasberg auction in I believe 1996.
