One of the coolest dropped letter errors I've ever seen! In case you're wondering what happened, dies sometimes fill with grease, dirt, metal shavings and all sorts of other debris that result in " Struck Through Grease" errors. After hundreds of strikes, these "fillings" become compact and very hard. Occasionally, they will fall out and get struck into another planchet, resulting in a dropped letter error. Or, in this case, a number. This one fell almost perfectly in place. Edited by Scooby Due 04/01/2011 11:57 pm

So if I understand this correctly there are a few coins out there that are missing the nine. Is that correct?

Sort of. They're not "missing", they have just been obstructed from showing up on the coin.
Coins leading up to just before my coin would have had an obstructed or very weakly struck 9. The coins after mine, would have had a full 9 being minted on the coin again.

Interesting to note that dropped letter errors can also occur if a planchet delaminates after it is struck.
If the flake has a letter (or number) on it and falls on the anvil die or an incoming planchet, it can also cause this error.

That's a really interesting point Scooby, I'd never considered the delamination scenario.
What do you think your coin is worth?
It's without a doubt, the most dramatically placed dropped die detail I've ever seen. Usually, they're much more minor letters. The larger the detail the less likely that it'll drop intact and stay intact through strike. Very cool coin!

Call me Coop Duce! Dropped letters are often smaller die detail, like the T from TRUST
On larger letters or numerals, they're often not fully intact when they're struck into the planchet
