Is This A Silver Twopence ? - Coin Community Forum

philipj451 New Member United Kingdom 2 Posts	Posted 04/02/2011 04:14 am Hi, I'm new to this forum and I hope someone might help me identify a coin. It is 14.5mm diameter and weighs 1 gram. The obverse has a picture of a tudor rose and the legend "? D G ROSA SINE SPINA". The reverse has a cross in a circle with 3 pellets in each quarter. I think it is a half-groat (twopence) but I can't find any in my books that do not have an image of the monarch on the obverse hence my question. thanks for any help Philip Report this Post to the Staff

Meldercat Valued Member Canada 268 Posts	Posted 04/02/2011 6:13 pm Hi, The inscription "D G ROSA SINE SPINA" can be found on coins hammered for Edward VI (son of Henry VIII) and Mary I (daughter of Henry VIII). I have seen a similar coin but I believe it may have been a fantasy copy. Your coin looks as though it may have been cast. I could be wrong and welcome other comments. I have the Spink catalogue for England, Scotland and Ireland and can not find the coin pictured. I hope this helps. Report this Post to the Staff

andyg Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 1321 Posts	Posted 04/02/2011 7:06 pm There are two types of Edward VI halfpenny, 1st type 1547 to 1549 has a portrait obverse, with the cross and pellets reverse. 2nd type 1550 to 1553 has the rose obverse, with a shield reverse. The coin above is neither having the rose obverse and cross and pellets reverse, which points to it being not genuine. I too think this looks cast rather than hammered, a picture of the edge may solve the argument. Report this Post to the Staff

I had suspected that it would probably be a fake of some sort but I thought that I would get some more expert opinion.
