C14ers found an error dime half a year ago. I'm pretty sure it is a "Broadstrike" Because of the lack of a reeded edge, but I need a second opinion. He got a pic of the coin and here it is:

What in the WORLD is this?!? And how much would it be worth? I am more into classic Coins than errors, so I don't know a whole lot about this topic. Thanks!

Like every thing else in this world its only with what someone is willing to pay for it. I collect error coins, and is only go $5-$10. But there are people out there willing to pay much more than me.

Looks like a simple off-center error. Definately not worth $1000 as a poster said. LOL More like $5-10 or so.

It is an uncentered broadstrike, none of the of the devices are affected. It occurred because of a collar malfunction when the coin was struck. The collar is basically a plate of steel with a hole in it and the collar sits between the two dies on the press. The collar is also known as the "third die" because it is responsible for confining the planchet between the dies and forming the edge/reeding. If the collar is not in place when a coin is struck, the planchet metal is extruded out between the dies and the coin gains a larger-than-normal diameter in addition to not getting reeded.

I am not so sure of the value. The Mint implemented some new QC measures(riddlers to remove coins of improper size, discontinuation of small mint bags, etc) around 2001 or so which has resulted in a dramatic reduction in errors leaving the Mint. Many of the errors from the last 10 years are worth quite a bit more than previous errors. Older ones would be worth ~$10 so that would at least be a starting point for this one. One thing to note is that the size is not markedly different from that of a normal dime and most of the value increases have been for coins with dramatic size differences.

I'm posting a pic of this coin, because it has me confused--perhaps a US error expert can help me understand what I'm seeing?
To my eyes, the outer rim of this dime appears thinner than the adjacent fields, as if it was smashed under pressure.
It looks a bit like a US cent taken from a "Lucky Penny" holder, versus caused by a error within the Mint?
Update: my eyes may have been fooled by the lighting angle.

it looks off center to me not sure if thats the proper error term since I don't collect errors but that would be my guess. I have no idea what the edge looks like but if it doesn't have the reeded edge it very well could be a broadstruck coin because that would mean it was struck out of collar but I would wait for an expert in error coins to verify which one this is

Edit: I just looked through some photos of broadstruck and off center coins and I am really leaning towards broadstruck now since none of the design is missing and it looks allot like the broadstruck examples I am finding pictures of. Still take this information with a grain of salt until confirmed by someone else because as stated above I am no error collector and am just learning right along side of others and rely on the expert opinions of others for information

The only problem with a partial collar is that it should have some reeding. If this coin has none, then it's not a partial collar. It would be interesting to see what Mike Diamonds says about this coin?
