Came across this one going through a small collection I have had for a while. Did not know about "Godless" coins before.

The Godless king coins in my opinion are a specialty unto themselves, they make a perfectly nice set for display from the 1cent to the 50 cent. The coins of course do not get the credit they diserve which is a shame, I would like to see them exploited more..

Well now DBM, this should open up a can of worms, according to my books on the subject they dont refer to the 1935 dollar as Godless, they do say however that the latin inscription refers to the Kings 25th year of reign, I now have 4 sets of Godless Kings, for each of the first 4 grades but I do not consider the 1935 dollar part of the set. How about it, how many yays or nays are there out there.

Yay ! the 1935 makes no reference to defending any faith, so I'd say it's godless. Thanks for pointing this out,

As for 1935, there is no 50 cent circulating piece, and the others (25, 10, 5, and 1) have DEI GRA on them (unless I'm mistaken, I'm going by Krause). Only the dollar coin was Godless. There are a few modern coins without DEI GRATIA on them. I'll look them up and post it later.

Thanks DBM, I had not thought of that before but you're right. I guess being a commemorative issue people were OK with it.

Alright, this is new to me. If it doesn't have the Latin words "DEI GRATIA", it's a godless coin?
DEI GRATIA = Latin for "By the Grace of God".
Didn't know that.
