Continuing on with my unboxing of many coins I am finding today, I just came across a box of 1943 wheat pennies, they're all 1943! Should I be excited?

Of course, out of 54 1943 wheat pennies, 1 of them does NOT stick to the magnet...and that's the one in the roughest condition :/

The shape is so bad, you can just about see a 3 on the front side, but not the rest of the date. Is there any safe way of cleaning it?

If it's not sticking to the magnet, the next test is to look at the "3" in 1943. The 3 and 8 are very different shapes, so a modified 1948 is very easy to identify.

Post some photos of it and it'll only take a few minutes for people to tell you that it's probably not a genuine 1943 copper penny.

Crazier things have happened though - so for that reason DO NOT clean it in any way. I can't stress that enough.

Post some photos and take it from there.

Are 1943 steel wheats worth more than a typical non key date wheat?

Yes they are worth slightly more, maybe 10-15 cents a piece, not because they're rare,
just because they are different. Kids love them and the war story that goes along with them.
Great piece of proud American history.
The magnet reference is because there are some very valuable 1943 coppers out there that
are not magnetic, but don't get too excited, the coin is probably so rusted it won't adhere to
the magnet.

False alarm! It was just an old 1943 dime stuck in there! Oh how I'm disappointed. Still all these 1943 pennys are cool, and will13 I think, maybe.
