I just got my order with my 2011 and 2010 proof set, and the Presidential dollars have some serious issues.

At first I though Lincoln had already started to tarnish or "TONE" on one edge, but since determined that it was a big glob of dirt or something. Pres. Fillmore has serious lathe circles on the background. No "shaving" in the mirror-like background of that coin. Pres. Pierce also shows lathe marks but not as bad. That is unacceptable in a proof coin.

Both sets have small little problems with them, but I could live with those. The only reason I buy proof sets is so I have a perfect example of every coin made... Well, I always thought I was getting one of every coin. I never realized I had to buy separate coins to get them all for some years, but I was young then.

I will be calling them tomorrow and I expect them to send me a call tag to pick it up because if they expect me to pay shipping and insurance to return such a horrible product, I will be buying my coins from the banks at face value from now on.

For the most expensive proof sets they have ever made (not counting silver proof sets) this is completely unacceptable.

I have read the others stories on this forum about people having to return a set several times, just to get a good one, but I will not be doing that unless they agree to pay for my return shipping.

I guess a should not expect anything more from a company run by the government. Maybe I will just start buying Japanese proof sets. I hear they have more respect for the products they produce!

Sorry for this to be my first post (long time reader) and be so negative, but it just makes me mad. I have been unemployed for over a year, and scrimped up enough cash to be able to keep my proof collection going and then I get this.

Maybe the mint needs a feedback thing like on ebay and then we would see we should not buy from them!

Anyway, off the soapbox now.

I got my 2010 silver proof set in the mail on Saturday, and while it didn't have the problems yours did, one of the sealed cases had a lot of dust inside it. The proof sets generally have ok quality control, it's the medals and mint sets I find spotted and toned coins so bad, I usually have order 2 or 3 sets, cherry pick and send the rest back for a refund. I don't know what they do with the returned coins, destroy them or repackage the good ones? But yeah, the quality control leaves a lot to be desired. I guess for a mint employee, it is just another job. Incidentally, when I ordered the set it was $57, two days later it went up to $65!

Well, of course the price went up because the price of silver went up and so they think they should get more for it using the silver that they purchased at the lower price! Joke.

The quality is why I have bought proof sets since I first found out about them as a kid. They were the most beautiful representation of the wonderful art we call our coins. I never thought I would have to take them out of the box immediately when I get them and make sure they are OK. That is what I am paying the mint to do. To give me as close to perfect a coin as they can make and that is why I pay almost 37 dollars for just under 7 dollars worth of coins.

I just have to say "Shame, Shame, SHAME"

Yeah, send it back and hope you get a better one. If not, ask for full refund. Better hurry up before the looming government shut down on Friday!
