I keep seeing the terms Class 5...class 4.....Class 2+6 in reference to double dies and such. Is there a place on the internet that can help explain these terms?

I wish I had something like this together at present, but I don't.

The class of hub doubling refers to what caused the doubling, specifically whether the doubling is offset, pivoted, distorted or distended, rotated, or tilted. Suffice to say, it goes into more detail explaining what the doubled die is beyond just a doubled die. It gives more seasoned collectors an opportunity to round down the number of dies to select for attribution based on where the doubling is and what "type" - or "class" of doubling is on the coin.

Thanks Chuck. Even if you don't have a reference, that explanation at least takes some of the " I think it's Greek" out of it.

John Wexler has a good write-up online, scroll 1/3 down the page and click on the links for Classes I-VIII

Simplest way of explaining it is:

Classes of hub doubling are to doubled dies what direction of spread is to repunched mintmarks.

If I say "class 2" to a more seasoned collector, they automatically get a picture in their head of what the coin might look like, just as saying "D/D south" has the same effect for repunched mintmarks.

Awesome biokemist. Thanks, I don't know how I missed that.... Oh ya I double checked and it came up on page 2 of my google search, thats how. You would think it would be in the top one or two. Thanks again, I got a lot of reading to do.
