Hard to get great pics because of the luster, but the area southeast of the ear has what appears to be a struck through area. The thing that puzzles me is that I found two exactly alike in the same bag.Could a die retain an object ?

Knowing the Rockwell hardness of the die would be the tell tell of the likeness of that happening Maineman.

But if it were gum, the chances of the shape of the object changing between strikes would be near 100%. I'm no rocket scientist, but if you mash gum at 39K pounds of force, it's likely to smush out a little.

I'm not sure of what you have there because the pic kinda leaves a little to be desired in seeing the details. It looks like a struck through, but I cannot be certain.

And yes, it is possible for something to stick to the die and mint a number of coins.

Hi Roger!

I received these 2 coins at the PO today. I'll be able to photograph and examine them sometime after the weekend.

I haven't had any time to study the pair, but a cursory glance confirms that the issue was certainly on or stuck on the Die.

These 2 may prompt more questions than you began with. (How do you classify or find an enthusiast of a "progressive" struck-thru?)(is that even a numismatic term?)

I'm not saying for certain that I know what it is yet- But I know it's unusual, and probably rather scarce.

Be honest- If you weren't looking for the 2006 Doubled ear, you wouldn't have ever discovered this, would you have? I know I wouldn't. Some pickers spend hours on a handful of coins, closely examining obverse, reverse then the third side. I know you to be a different type- you look for the varieties that are actually in demand. And in the course of doing so, you lucked out in noticing something you'd have never seen if it were on the obverse of a 2009 cent, right?!

These are 2 cool coins. I'll be updating this thread when I am able to give these coins the attention they deserve.

Thank you for your trust and respect, I hope to show you it was well earned. -Chris

I've been away on a fishing trip and just returned...but thanks Chris for taking the time out of your busy schedule. And yes you are right on the how's and why's of finding them. Am looking forward to what you determine after a closer examination.
