This is the 2nd one I've seen just like this. I assume it's the Eagle's shield from the reverse.....?

The area in question looks to be concave. Not sure how that happened
but a clash would show up in the fields of the coin and would be raised
i believe.

Indian is correct. This is a struck-through. Probably grease.

Because of the size and nature of this one I would say it's worth at least a very modest premium. A bit unusual and different from the typical Grease Filled Die.

What does the reverse look like? I suspect it is not a Grease Fill strike.

If a grease error, it would seem by this picture that this area is the most prone, no? Or does this pic now rules out a "grease" error. The rev. of the mint state one has this damage/wear.

I strongly suspect we are looking at a weak striking problem. I have seen these before that show this weakness in the head and on the shield on the reverse. The central area is actually concave compared to the edge around it.

Well, now, two of these, and they're 12 years apart. The plot thickens. Conder101, your theory seems more plausible, now, than random grease.

Strange, I didn't think L.H. Oswald worked at the mint.
