Hypothetical question. If I have a slabbed coin and I want to add it to an album, would it be smart to take it out? I'd like 2 answers please, one assuming the coin is an expensive key date (1909 S VDB for example) and one assuming it is a common or slightly scarce date (I dunno an example, just something less expensive).

What I did: I have a few slabbed coins in my circulated/business strike collection. To retain the value of the slabbed coins, I put a small note in place of the coin in the album, "See Slab" or "In Slab". I have a binder page for slabs.

That's a good idea,that way you don't waste the slabbing fee. John1

For me it is simple. I collect coins, not plastic. Any slabbed coins are taken out, the plastic thrown away, the coin put in my Albums. I used to save those little stickers saying what they were but said to myself, SELF, WHY? So then threw them away too. As I said, I collect coins not paper, not plastic, only coins. However, I do collect the Red Books too.

I collect coins. I put my coins in albums. Yes, if I had a 1909-S VDB I would crack it out of the slab and put it in my album. I also collect mid-grade coins, so it would not be an MS graded coin, but VG-XF at best.

Why did you buy it in the slab in the first place? If you got a great deal on it, then I think its fine to take out. If you paid alot, then I think its worth it to consider how much more you paid because it was slabbed, and resale value and so forth. I'm probably the least knowledgeable here, but thats my thinking.

No, actually your right on with your thinking. Most people that purchase a slabbed coin are thinking about reselling it and in a slab it will usually sell better and faster, regardless of what it is. I've seen many coins worth a few dollars in a slab. Many people are slab happy and think the only way to get a real coin is to buy one in a slab. Again, for me and some others it is not the future of the coin that is important, it's now mine, mine, mine. I plan on keeping all my coins. Many others spend a lot of time considering how ane when to sell them. Kind of like the people that buy a new car, have protective seat covers put on so the seats will always look new. New for who? I once did that and when the car fell apart, was junked, it had pretty nice seats.

I think these days people also buy slabs to guard against fakes, at least have a bit of confidence your not getting a counterfeit, especially if it's from the big 3.

I like justcarl's analogy, I did that once and when I sold the truck and took the covers off,I realized what an idiot I had been saving those seats for somebody else to enjoy.

I'd keep the sticker if you remove the coin.

UNFORTUNATELY many of the slabs of the top 3 TPGS's are being counterfieted also. So not only do many of us probably have faked coins in our collections but many could have fake coins in fake slabs too. I think what is soon to be needed is a TPGS for slabs. So you buy a slab and have it slabbed by them. Of course China will also make those too so we would need a TPGS for the TPGS for the Third party grading service and on and on and on and
