I have to wonder why the employee tested the coins "after" the guy left.On a $3K purchase a little caution would be in order.

There was a post awhile ago where the same thing happened in Florida somewhere, and I think it's the SAME GUY! Holy crap! I need to search for that thread, it was a bunch of Morgans, and I think it was about the same value.... It had a pic of the guy from a side view...

Wow. I would also figure a specialty shop would know enough about their specialty to have the ability to determine an entire album of fakes.

Is it possible that the price they offered him for the coins was so low that they wanted hinm to leave quickly. Not endorsing fake coins in any way here, but some silver and gold buyers, probably don't want you to think too hard before you accept their, "generous" offer.

In this case the seller was clearly a thief, but I wonder how long some shops want Grandma or Gramps, hanging around while they check to see if it is real....

Please understand I'm sure most buyers are 100% honest and pay everyone a fair amount for their coins but not all... Greed is not a "one way street"

The only thing that would make sense is that they paid him in monopoly money!

There is a guy on craigslist in New York that advertises that he is paying 3 times face value for pre-1964 US quarters. Yes, you can actually bring in a quarter and he will give you three.

I wonder how long he wants you hanging around.... once he makes an offer?

O'Rly? I missed that part of the article.
Just because the police are looking for him, it doesn't mean there will be a charge. They would need to prove intent which would be pretty difficult here. I really don't see enough information to definitively say that this guy is a thief.

As far as we know he could have purchased them off of ebay "cheap" and tried to resell them for profit with no idea that they were counterfeit. Unlikely, but cart before the horse or something like that.

Wow! I am so wrong. Good point, Sorry.

Even if they are fake, there is no way for us to know if he knew. All we know I guess is that someone bought a bunch of fakes. Why they bought, and why they were sold needs investigation.

I'm assuming the police highly suspect this guy of knowingly selling these counterfeits, but as soon as he starts playing dumb there is nothing they can do unless there's other evidence.

Once of the shops in my area seem to do more buying of gold/silver than dealing actual coins. He seems to issue checks to the people once the value starts getting in the $100's of dollars.

$3000 is a lot of cash to keep on hand (unless a customer made a 3K purchase that day too). Why that shop isn't writing checks to the seller and matching the name on the check with that person's drivers license is beyond me. Then police wouldn't need help finding this guy (and he might have not sold it once he saw his info getting logged).
