I've been cent roll searching about 1.5 boxes a week for a couple months. I've been using my normal credit union where I do my banking for this. I started out with one purchase and one dump branch, but now I'm up to 2 purchase and 3 dump locations to hopefully distribute the load without causing drama with the credit union.
When I dump the teller will often ask for my member number and enter it into the computer. I get cash back from the dumps, no deposit.
Then often in the same day a few hours later I'll go to a different branch to obtain a box of rolls paying with that same cash or sometimes including it with a bigger withdrawal of cash I need to get through the week.
Anyway, do you think I should worry about my credit union getting mad at me for this? I know to never dump at the same place you obtain from, but what if it's at different branches of the same bank? With the above procedure will they see that I'm just obtaining and returning coins to the same overall credit union?
Do you roll searchers get multiple banks or do you use one bank at a time?

I was obtaining boxes from multiple locations and dumping at 2. Now I obtain my boxes from a single location and dump at several. I only get them from one bank because It's the only one I've found that get's their boxes from the Federal reserve, versus all the others who get their from Brinks. Since this location is a credit union and they don't keep a large quantity of coin on hand I generally have to order them. In an attempt not to overload them or anger them I put in an order once a month, and that order is usually for several boxes of coin.
It's hard to say whether you would anger them or not. I've had a few locations that don't mind at all, but I've also had a few tellers who seem to be lazy and don't want to move from their chair give a few grumbles or some attitude in the past. As long as you aren't going in to dump or order large amounts during prime traffic hours I don't think many of them care.

I like that idea of ordering multiple boxes once a month. If I were to do that I would probably also try to dump smaller amounts more often instead of an almost full picked through box at a time.
I shoot for 2 boxes a week and it's always a race to get them done before the weekend or before mid-week when the banks have horrible hours. If I had like 5 boxes stock piled it would be nice to go through them at my leisure and stop off at the bank every few days for a dump.

I pick up from 3 locations and dump at 1. I used to pick up from 1 locastion (the bank I now dump at). When they told me they would have to start charging me $4.75 for each box of pennies I got I got really upset. I asked why and they said they are charged for them. When I asked if they were charged for coins they had picked up they said yes. I then asked why they didn;t charge to count coins and they said it was a free service to the customers......I was very confused. They would charge me for 1 thing but not the other. So I now dump all my coins at that bank.

Talk to your credit union ! I pick up and dump at the same one. They told me to dump on Thursdays because that's when they send em to the Fed. They save at least one $50 bag a week for me and this morning they called and said they had four bags, did I want them before they were picked up. I really believe communication is the key...I was up front with them at the start, offered to pay for any extra expenses, and told them to let me know if I became a pest....it has worked out really great for me.Find a bank that is agreeable and stick with them.

I'd say continue doing what your doing. I highly doubt that any bank or credit union has anyone on the payroll monitoring who deposits what and how many times. And if they did, which is really unlikely, what are they going to do to you? Have you shot at sunrise? Eventually all banks will start a charge for such services anyway. I'm only surprized banks don't charge you for standing in line and using their A/C while you breath.

I am lucky enough to have a bank in my area with a coin counting machine that is free for customers. So I use them as a dump. No need to wrap my cents back up, plus there is no chance that a fellow roll searcher will get my dump. Maybe more banks will get these machines.

Good call Carl. I think to continue the same path you've been on. I wouldn't change it up. I have one dump bank and one pick up bank sometimes I'll pick up at another here or there. As long as your a member you should be fine with the dump bank.

I use one bank, multiple locations. Even if you used 2 different banks you could still get your coins back if the bank you dumped at returned them. The coin and cash distributors go to a few different banks. I only use HSBC and have never gotten a box of my coins back I also have never been asked about my transactions at other banks the only thing they ask is what I am doing with the change, sometimes where I get it (I dont tell them exactly because I don't want them to get mad at the other bank branch) and what I look for.

I use about 6 different banks. The tellers all know me and the fact I mark my rolls with an X so I don't get them back. I only get bank rolled boxes from one bank but stop at the others for customer wrapped. I think Maineman is right when he said to make friends with the tellers and they will work with you.

Definitely good tips in this thread. Thanks.
One other question: Does anyone here return full boxes of coin to the dump bank in an actual bank box? How does the bank react to you dropping off a full bank box?
Me personally I like to fly under the radar as much as possible. This might be overkill, but when dumping I try to make it appear like I'm simply cashing in my pocket change jar as opposed to returning a picked through box of coins I got 3 days ago from the branch the next town over.
Is this a good idea or do the dump bank tellers tend to not mind if you plop a bank box or two down on their counter every week?

Quote: When I dump the teller will often ask for my member number and enter it into the computer. I get cash back from the dumps, no deposit. Aw, they're just keeping track of your money-laundering activities, that's all. Not that they'd ever want to make a case for that against a nice guy like you.

^^ I actually posted that before lunch. During lunch today I went out for a $28 dump (two dime rolls too). I got the same teller (Porschia is her name) who member numbered me the past two times but this time she didn't seem to care who I was. Hopefully they're starting to trust my returned rolls.

That's good, trent. The less paper they rack up on those activities, the better. I'm glad for you. Edited to take out an extra "they"...I have enough trouble being understood without sounding like I'm stuttering.

The problem I see with "flying under the radar" is that several members have done it, then when the bank decided they didn't like it, the members in question were ticked off, upset, and offended. And that is the biggest reason I like being up front about it....the side benefit is that they call me when they have extra because they know what I'm doing.Lady at the post office gave me a pile of half dollars the other week...that turned up six 40%ers.

I once had a branch of a bank I was working for at the time refuse to allow me to use their coin counter for dumping halves. I had been dumping about $3000 in halves there weekly. Furious, the next week I brought in 10 boxes worth of nickels I had searched through and dumped 20,000 nickels on them. It took them well over a half an hour to count them, and the machine broke several times, and the teller helping me started to cry, prompting the manager to come over. My company ended up putting me on warning and forbided me from using the coin machine in that particular branch but it was well worth getting my revenge and infuriating the branch manager in exchange. Needless to say once the company laid me off I immediately started dumping again there regardlessly since now as a normal customer they have no hold over me. -XoG
