I've been putting my coins in ziploc freezer bags with a few little desiccant packages. I'm considering throwing in an oxygen absorber packet or two as well. Has anyone tried this and has it has any effect (positive or negative)?

From what I have read, the oxygen absorber is powdered iron oxide. It is usually used when packing food in sealed containers to soak up that last bit of O2.

I havent personally done that, but I have a few Questions.
Is the coins raw, or are they sealed in Air Tights, or Slabbed in any way?
If you use Dessicant that will take the moisture out, but it only works up to a certain point, then it needs to be replaced.
If you want to remove the Air,i.e. Oxygen Absorber, why dont you simply just vacuum seal it. in some way
If you store them a long time in Ziploc, won't you get PVC Damage possibly?
Which Climate do you live in, is it Harsh?
I guess this all will depend on How long do you want to store the coins, and what is the value of the coins.
I personnally think that a lot of these products can be harmful in the long run.
Check out similar threads on the forum, I have read some interesting threads on storing and protecting in here, and there is some very knowledgable people that has good advice.

Zarboy, to the best of my knowledge, here in the U.S. food grade containers of any kind are PVC free. Also corrosion ( verdgris, tarnish, rust, ect, cannot take place in an environment free of O2.

lorax, I agree with Zarboy on most of his points, however I don't think an O2 absorber is going to help much, it can't hurt for sure. Seeing how zip-locks are not air tight they would have to be replaced along with the silica gel packets. If they can be reused like the gel packs, and it makes you feel good about using them I say go ahead and throw one or two in there.

Yes, I can replace/rotate the desiccant.

These would be for coins that I have in bulk, I occasionally want to open it to add or remove or just look at the coins.

Ziploc bags are pvc free so no chance of PVC damage.

humid

The coins aren't numistically valuable. Even so, I'd like to keep them from getting tarnished (especially the Presidential dollars which tarnish easily).

I wonder about that myself. I'm hoping to find someone that has tried it already and knows if it is harmful or not.

Not hurting is my number one priority, Helping is the number two priority. I use ziplock freezer bags which are much heavier and better sealed, however, you are right, I would have to replace them occasionally since I do sometimes open the bags. From what I have read they are not reusable, the iron powder inside the sachet oxidizes and heating it won't reverse the process.

, I just got an idea, I want to see if using a Big upright refrigerator, remove all the metal shelves, replace with custom slide in ones, Remove compressor etc, seal off any holes inside, leave one, remove the compressor, install a one way valve with a vacuum pump. The only thing is, what is the walls made of?
It is some type of plastic, Maybe has some PVC in it? I think one can get quite a lot of coins inside such a cabinet. Hey, it even has its own lock.

The walls of a frig would contain a metal outside casing, a foam insulation and a plastic interior panel. Not sure if what you tried would work, as the seal to the fridge might not create a tight enough seal
