I have been working some uncleaned coins for a few months now. I think that I have one attributed but would appreciate some more opinions.

I think I have a bronze Arcadius, 383-408 AD AE3 VIRTUS EXCERCITI Arcadius standing Left facing crowned by victory standing Left beside him. SEAR 4233, G37, T101, RIC 47b that I found on rand ttreasures.com.

Part of the coin is missing so I am not positive it is a match. At its widest the coin is 15.5 mm and weighs about 2.56 grams (my scale needs to be recalibrated, but a nickle weighs 4.9 grams).

Also, any help with the mint would be great

The busts of the emperors tend to look the same in this late period. Your guess is probably correct, but it could also be Theodosius.

Echinzento, thanks for your help! I figured since it was late emperor that it would be difficult to get an exact attribution, but I am not going to complain. The coin came with a bunch of slugs to practice on for 0.35 cents a piece. I like the deep details and a little mystery will add to the coin. I will be looking for a Theodosius to compare[:)

I think the mint for this coin is AIKA. Any idea what that might be? I have not found a mint to match.

hi toddjfritz

I think your right about Arcadius.

More likely the mint is ALEA... Alexandria

I believe the the partial obv. legend on your coin reads VSPFAVG.

This might be a similar coin, yours perhaps from the A (1st officina) not B (2nd).

The coin pictured here is Arcadius RIC 75.....Wildwinds http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/bigp...adius/i.html

PS While I was looking around for your coin I bumped into one I have been trying to attribute... turns out its a Valens.

Thanks

Doucet. Thanks! You are probably right on the mint. It could definitely be "ALEA".

Would like to see your Valens! And thanks for your thread to Wildwinds. I followed to all of the Arcadius photos and realised that I think that I have another "Arcadius"?

The photo (obverse) in my previous post/reply is what I think is an Arcadius. Sorry for the redundancy. I am having tech difficulties

OK I think I have figured it out. It is actually user difficulties Anyway here is some pics of the "Arcadius"? What do you think?

Sorry for the so so pics. My old camera could be better.
