What is it called when a penny has like a small 'bump' of extra copper on it. I've found several coins where the number 9 looks like it has a little extra copper in it.
Another coin where the number 8 has a copper 'bump' in the bottom circle...and another coin where there is what looks to be an extra copper mark in between the letters I and B in LIBERTY.

I've read somewhere that it is probably from dust when it was being made, but for the life of me, I can't find what the actual term is. I've put the coins aside...but I just don't know if they are even worth saving?

Sorry for asking stupid questions...but I've just started looking at coins and it is quite confusing!

Thanks!

could be die chips or even cracks. Some pics would really help.

Yes, pics would help. Usually bumps are die chips, lines are die cracks.

BTW, I save all my die chip finds. Not that they command a premium over face. I just like them.

Do not think of die chips as "extra copper" because nothing extra is added to the coin. The planchet metal just fills the die void when the coin is struck, resulting is a raised bump. Die chips are very common and are a normal part of the minting process.

i also save the misc. coins in a small plastic coffee cantainer labeled breaks, chips, cracks, struck through, clashes, laminations. as stated - probably no premium value - just fun to find and inexpensive to keep.

There are no such thing as 'stupid' questions everyone here has asked these questions before, including me.

So, ask away.
