Depends what grades you are targeting here and in the small cent collection Jay. Get your fifty quality posts in and I'll donate some of your missing years for nothing from rolls of circulated I keep. If you want high grade pieces, many of the people that frequent here also have raw inventory or graded inventory to choose from.
I find five cent and one cent pieces still look really appealing in EF40 so it doesn't have to be a super expensive endeavor. As I mentioned above, barring the key dates, it can also be free for standard examples in fine.

I guess I want to complete them with similar grades to what I have. I really am just getting into this collection. It was handed down to me and I figure I would complete it. Its pretty obvious to me that my coins are/were circulated but seem to be in good condition. I really do not know much about grading.

I bought a set of nickels less the 1925 and 1926 on ebay from a seller who is now advertising 101 nickels in his title. The price was good. I got some varieties and later bought the 1926 then a certified 1925. All I need to do now is get a 2011 and keep up with each year. I'd like my chrome and tombacs to look a bit less worn so I am going to upgrade those. I think it's a neat set.

Jayman931, it's great to see another American collector of Canadian coins. I have a full set of Canadian nickels in my collection 1922 - 2011, minus the 1925 and 1926 far. Like wheezy, I bought my collection from an ebay seller (I wonder if it was the same guy) and it was near complete. If you're patient you can get some deals on ebay. However, joining this forum is the best thing you can do for coin collecting. There are many incredible members who can help.

I have even made up a type set of Canickels myself, and I am far away from Canada.
Average grade EF. All mine are common dates for type. Has been fun to collect.

I too am an American that collects Canadian coins. You should be able to find MS60 or better of these dates for around $5 each which would be my target price to pay. 1944, 1945, 1952, 1953, 1954 - yes all of them are steel so pay attention to how much rust you will find on the surfaces, less rust is best! When you go to a dealer, be sure to go through his box of foreign coins - great place to pick up bargin pieces.

Hi wheezy! I just replied to your e-mail.
After checking on it, I purchased my Canadian nickel collection from someone different than you. You receive two additional coins. I received one 1977 and 1996, not two varieties as you. Mine are BU in the later dates, even some in the 1950's and 1960's. The early coins are XF.I am very pleased with the collection.
Coinstar machines: Every time I walk by one I take a look at the machine, but have never found anything in the reject bin, ever.
I live in North Dakota so Canadian coins are common around here. I know a woman from southern Wisconsin who works in a bank. The bank actually throws out Canadian coins when they receive them and have been doing it for years. When I heard about this I asked her to save them for me. All of a sudden the bank decided to keep them and if I like, they would "sell" them to me for American currency at face. HA!

Matchbox - I would take them up on the offer - especially if you were able to cherrypick them! Have you noticed on ebay that the Canadian values are higher than USA dollars!! I had a bank that was giving me all of the foreign coins too until they put a stop to it - they must have given me $100 worth of coin - bought a 1898 $1 banknote in Toronto for $80 when I was last there - not great condition and the sides had been trimmmed but heck it was FREE!

Don,t forget when you see a Canadian 1953 5 cent, flared near, strait far are the good ones. I was at a coin show one time looking at the 53's and something was not right so I bought 4 in a row. The cost was $5.25. Got them home and got my book out. After careful study my best one was the NSF near VF 20. He must have been a new dealer.
