I bought two Indian Heads off ebay. I noticed once I received them that they were cleaned. How much does this effect the value of the coins? Is there a safe way to clean a coin without effecting the value. These coins I purchased you can see the lines in it from the cleaning. If I had a good camera I would take close ups of them.

Thanks everyone

How much it affects the value depends on the date...but if you see the lines from cleaning it's not a good sign...generally I might pay 40% of value for better dates but completely avoid common ones because they are easy to find in good condition.Pics would help get a better answer. But it is totally individual prefernce that matters. If you like them and don't plan on selling, that's one thing. If you hope to keep them and maybe make a few bucks down the road, then they aren't a good investment.

There are a bunch of threads here about cleaning coins and conserving them. Worth a read if you have the time.

Common date Indians are often grouped some problem some not. Value is generally low unless they are in excellent condition.

to the forum BTW!

If they are rare coins or high grade coins, YES! If just common grade/date coins, not much
Rest in Peace

If they weren't described as cleaned I would ask for a refund or give the seller a negative feedback-or both! AND Welcome !

There is somethings you should think about with this hobby. Are you in it for FUN? Are you into coins for something to do? Are you thinking about this as an investment?
I say this since I many times have purposely purchased cleaned coins. Why? For one thing they can be a lot cheaper than non cleaned coins. And if your collecting coins for a hobby and for FUN, so what if they are cleaned? As long as you are happy with your coins, it should really make little difference if cleaned, conserved or just natural.
If it bothers you if a cleaned coin is to shinny, just put it on a kitchen wincow sill for a few months and the shinnyness will tone down.
As to your question, it is true that cleaned coins are not as valuable as original ones. Again, depends on what you are doing with your coins. If you are happy with those, no ones buisness but your own.

Don't pay market price for cleaned coins...no matter what. They are altered...period.

If the auction did not indicate these were cleaned, return them.
