COLUMBIA FALLS, Mont. - United States Mint and National Park Service officials celebrated the release of the Glacier National Park quarter today-three days before the start of National Park Week. The reverse (tails side) design of the new quarter depicts a classic view of the northeast slope of Mount Reynolds towering in the distance, while a mountain goat clamors over the rocky slopes of the park's high country.

"The Glacier National Park quarter will connect America to the wonder, grandeur and beauty of one of the Nation's most awe-inspiring natural treasures," said United States Mint Associate Director for Sales and Marketing B. B. Craig.

Craig shared the spotlight at Columbia Falls High School with Glacier National Park Superintendent Chas Cartwright. Following the ceremony, attendees exchanged their currency for rolls of the Glacier National Park quarter. Children 18 years of age and younger received a free quarter to commemorate the event. A public coin form was held on April 12 at 5 p.m. at the Glacier National Park Community Building at park headquarters in West Glacier.

The Glacier National Park quarter is the seventh coin in the United States Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The new quarter was released to the Federal Reserve Bank on April 4. At noon Eastern Time the same day, the United States Mint began offering collectible bags and rolls containing the Glacier National Park quarter at http://www.usmint.gov/catalog and 1-800 USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order at 1-888-321-MINT (6468). More information about products featuring the Glacier National Park quarter is available at the Web site.

Glacier National Park is named for its prominent glacier-carved terrain and remnant glaciers descended from the ice age of 10,000 years ago. Glacial forces, ancient seas, geologic faults and uplifting all combined to create some of the most spectacular scenery on earth. Known to the Blackfeet as the "Backbone of the World," Glacier National Park preserves more than one million acres of forests, alpine meadows, lakes, rugged peaks and glacially carved valleys in the Northern Rocky Mountains. These lands were first set aside as a national reserve on February 22, 1897 (29 Stat. 907).

Interesting, but I think they kinda over did it with the quarters.
I mean, making one for every state is cool, but now for national parks? What next?
I say just stick with a design for a few decades.
But of course, it suggests more to collect for collectors. I guess that's how the mint makes some money.

thanks for the news, but once again another quarter that, unless you buy it, is practically impossible to find.

That's a beautiful quarter. Hoping to fill an ATB whitman folder from circulations initially, possibly moving them to a dansco after I see how it's going

I've said this before......these designs on the ATB's are FAR superior to the State Qtrs.
The depth of each portrait is incredible (esp. the 2011 designs). "Depth" isn't something ANY of the State Qtrs. had much of.
And the mintages will/are likely to be MUCH MUCH lower in many cases comparatively.
Value ? ... ....well.....probably not too likely, there may be a "boon" for some of them, including slabs, but then eventually interest will wane, and they'll kind of taper off in value IMO.
But this doesn't matter to me, as it's my nature to collect whatever I can that comes out, and in the best condition possible.
And this Glacier Qtr. is REALLY cool !
Definitely gonna be one of my personal favorites.
I will collect them all in P & D business strikes from circulation for folders, family, and friends.
I'll purchase the Mint, Proof, and Silver Proof Sets to put them in my Dansco's as well.
Why not ? ......it's fun ! ....

I'd like to see less frowns on the new Ultra Modern stuff the Mint is putting out. Now I definitely understand the complaints against what they're doing, and the "Classic" collectors casting angry/wary disapproving glances......but I'd just say this.....

"Don't hate the player, hate the game !" ......

(and you can't hate "the game" that is our hobby and what brings more new collectors into this world!)

The Glacier quarter is well done, my personal favorite of the five issued this year. Can't wait for the 5 oz'ers, to be issued, the design should really 'pop' on those, but in general, I agree, the parks are much more superior in every way to the state and territorial quarters.

I think that the 2011 quarters may not be easily collectable, but I love a challenge!
