mysilveryears - Very nice 1/4 ecu of Henry IV, struck in Rennes (mint mark '9'). Recently I bought a one struck in Bayonne (mint mark 'L'): 1605 FranceQuarter ecu of Henry IV. The mint mark 'L' is located just below the shield.

Nice! Yours is a much stronger strike. I have two more of these, bought from the same dealer at a local show a few weeks ago. That purchase moved my oldest French coin back two centuries. According to this dealer, there is a *lot* of good stuff available in France if you go there and are able to understand the language well enough to count your pocket change.

Very interesting thread you should consider by decade just to see how much farther back it can go.

t360, beautiful patina, I love coins which did circulate, they have real character. I always try to imagine who handled them. Today's PROOF can never give you that

We better take a breather now, or someone may starting singing:
Slow down, you move too fast. We got to make the 1600s last. Posting scans of old hammered coins. Collecting for fun and feelin' groovy.

Quote: "Slow down, you move too fast." LOL, ya got me playing catch-up again! I'd be totally remiss if I allowed the thread to escape into the 1500's and miss my two from sixteen oh three. These are both amazingly detailed thalers from the rolled die era. This one is from the Austrian Empire, Hall (Tirol) mint; size= 41mm: This Maximillan Teutonic Knights thaler is one of my top favorite coins of all ages and localities. Any number of minor variations exist bearing the date 1603. It is not exceedingly rare, but prices for better specimens have taken a big jump since I acquired this one a year ago. It's also a favorite of the fakery artists, so if you take a fancy to owning one, do be careful of your source. size= ~42mm. And to move us back to the cusp of the next (previous) century, here is yet another France 1/4 ecu, 1600, size= ~30mm:
