Do you see Mr. Potato Head?
I see it--and nice group of coins from the 1500s. Sadly, I have none.

This German state is known for its rich variety in motives.

Do you mean motifs?

And is that something about truth is in wine?

France / French Colonies
Billon douzain of Charles, Cardinal de Bourbon.

The Catholic League considered Charles de Bourbon the rightful King of France after the death of King Henry III in 1589. It minted coins in his name from 1589-1593.

Interestingly, this is an example of the first New World French colonial issues. In 1640, old douzain coins were counterstamped with a fleur-de-lys within a beaded oval. After the coins were counterstamped, they were sent overseas for circulation in French Canada (Nouvelle France) and Louisiana.

A teston is a silver 1/4 thaler, similar in size to a US silver quarter dollar.

How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Ended-At-1492-Waiting-On-1491 How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go?-Ended-At-1492-Waiting-On-1491

France
1/4 ecu of Charles, Cardinal de Bourbon.

Minted at Rouen (partially visible mint mark "B" at 6h) by the Catholic League.

The obverse legend reads "CAROLUS X D. G. FRANCO. REX" which translates as "Charles X, by the grace of God, King of France."

Actually Charles had already died in 1590 as a captive of the rightful heir to the throne, Henry IV.

Henry IV was busy trying to gain control of his kingdom with help from Elizabeth I of England.

The Catholic League could not agree on another candidate for the throne, and so continued to mint coins in the name of Charles.
