Those are nice--was the Paris "A" coin struck over a host?

Yes, it could be an overstrike. I have been thinking it was just triple struck.

1585 France / Feudal States / Navarre 1 Franc of Henry III of Navarre. I'm not sure why his coins are inscribed "HENRICUS II", but he is always referred to as Henry III. (Historians must have renumbered the monarchs of Navarre named Henry.) He was later to become King Henry IV of France.

It is possible the explanation for "HENRICUS II" appearing in the legend is that he was both Henry II, Viscount of Béarn and Henry III, King of Navarre. Since this coin was minted at Pau, the capital of Béarn, it was therefore engraved "HENRICUS II".
