1564Not that I don't want to see t360s exemplar, but here is mine. 1 Marck Denmark, minted under Fredrik II. It is not common to see square coins in the Nordic region.

Litotes: The 1564 square 1 marck coin was very good looking. Any knowledge as to what type of metal we're looking at. I don't think I've ever seen a square coin other than the recent Canadian coins that were put out over the past few years.
(Edit follows): When we are this far back in time, almost 450 years ago were there any gold coins in existance? The equilivant to our modern day clad coins? Copper coins?

Unfortunately I don't have one to show you. I do have this one gold angel struck around 1507-09 by Henry VII of England with pheon mint mark (London), undated. (shhh... I don't think I told the mrs about this one. she still wants a new kitchen)

Is that George slaying the dragon? Pistrucci's inspiration?
Or Archangel Michael slaying the serpent? Inspiration for a more modern coin?

All Danish and Norwegian marck coins have silver content, but not all Swedish ones. As for square coins, they are not that uncommon all in all. I have square coins from Bangladesh, The Philippines, British India, India, Japan, Malaya, Myanmar (Burma), Pakistan, Ceylon, Sri Lanka, Straits Settlements, The Netherlands, Guernsey, Regensburg, Groningen Ommelanden, Saxe-Hildburghausen, Aruba, Bahamas, Curacao, East Caribbean States, Netherlands Antilles, Surinam and Swaziland - in addition to Denmark. Like t360 I am looking for a Swedish one as well, so far without luck. And yes - I have been actively searching for square coins for quite a while

It was a nice one, though (and my lips are, if not walrussed, then at least sealed). As for gold coins, the oldest one I know were minted by king Croisos of Lydia, year 561 - 546 b.o.t. Before that they used a mixed alloy containing both silver and gold as they didn't have the technology to separate them.

I am - like many of us - just enjoying the show. My next entry though will be 1548, but I'm going to Canada tomorrow for 10 days, so I'm afraid I'll miss my moment One thing I've been wondering about though; How big/small are these coins? Please put out the diameter, because it seems like the coins are about 30mm!? Keep 'em coming, let 'em flow!

Copper coins? some of the oldest coins were electrum, a natural gold/silver alloy. Clad, extremely doubtful. Copper, sure. I've wondered if there was the equivalent to proof coins.

biggfredd: After all these years if we did come accross a proof coin would we be smart enought to know it. After all 450 years ago is not yesterday.
