There are some Hellenistic-Greek issues with regnal dates as old as the 200s BC; Ptolemaic Egypt seems to have been first, starting around 260 BC. The Seleucids started a few decades later later, but they actually used a "calendar" with Year 1 the founding of the dynasty in 312 BC, rather than the more ambiguous regnal year system. The flaws with the regnal date system are apparent when I consider my own "oldest dated coin": a drachm of one of the Ariarathes kings of Cappadocia; it's dated "Regnal Year 33" but because there appears to be some debate whether it is in fact Ariarathes IV or Ariarathes V, I can't tell whether this date actually corresponds to 186 BC or 131 BC. If I can't count that, then I think my "earliest dated coin" is my widow's mite dated Year 16 of Tiberius: 30 AD.

1546 Germany, Town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony. Mariengroschen, silver (23mm). Hamelin is famous for the folk tale of the Pied Piper.

The last coin posted at CoinPeople (a 1526 half groschen) were 26 September. In December 17th someone posted a 1524 coin but it wasn't approved since the 1525 still were missing.

Time to make things a little more exotic. 1545 Sultanate of Dehli, Suri dynasty, silver rupee, Gwalior mint, dated AH 952 (date is on left pic, at 9 0'clock inside the square, written in Indo-Arabic numerals). 952 Islamic calendar went from 15 March 1545 to 4 March 1546. I'm now out of the game until 1532.

Quote: "t360, this is the one of the prettiest coins in this topic. Well done." It's particularly impressive considering the size and the high grade and the fact that early Swedish coins of this caliber are pretty darn scarce and expen$ive. You just added -another- to my ever expanding search list.
