My grandmother gave me this coin and I'm wondering if I should have it sent to be graded. Would love any feedback. Thanks! Edited by bosciegift 04/14/2011 1:39 pm

I would say no, but in higher grades this issue skyrockets in price... I would say this coin grades well under the price jump... I would grade it somewhere between VF-35 and XF-40, the obverse doesn't do the reverse justice in this case...

Nice looking coin it has the strike weakness characteristic of most New Orleans Morgans but no signs of heavy wear.
I would grade this one AU-50

Here is another picture of the obverse using the same camera as the reserve side.

I'm a bit confused. I found this 1896-0 MS63 priced at over 5k. To me it looks like my coin (above) is much better then this one (at the link below).. all though I know very little about coins. What am I missing? https://www.executivecoin.com/p-548...-toning.aspxThanks again for your help!!

Your confusion is understandable. The coin you linked is a choice mint state piece. Yours is a lightly circulated piece. The 1896-O is scarce in mint state condition but common in circulated condition. You think your coin looks better but the linked coin is uncirculated and toned, making it far more desirable to collectors and much harder to find on the market than circulated pieces that are common and easily purchased.
I'd value your coin at $100 and agree with the AU50 grade. It's worth hanging onto but is not a rare or scarce coin.

Sorry to say but your coin is nothing like that one. The biggest difference is circulated vs. uncirculated- yours has visible wear and very little remaining luster while the $6k example has no wear at all and full luster. 1896O is a conditional rarity in grades of AU and above meaning that the vast majority of existing specimens were heavily circulated. Your coin is still worth more than a regular AU50 Morgan but it is definitely not a multi-thousand dollar coin.

AU50/53 Put it into an airtite holder and enjoy. The fact that your Grandmother gave you this coin is reward enough
