So a couple of weekends ago I bought a roll of wheat pennies all 1940s and 1950s. I bought them more for the fun of looking through them and on the off chance of finding a treasure.

I did find a 1935 in there that was cool. I love the history that is attached to these older coins. 1935 was smack in the middle of the Great Depression, I think its cool to think about what the penny was really worth to the person who's hands it was in? A gallon of gas cost 10 cents back then. Bread was 8 cents a loaf.

Any way, I have this roll of wheats now, not really in any good shape and not sure what I should do with them. I could start collecting Lincolns, but I have never been interested in the pennies. Is this roll really worth anything?...any suggestions?

A roll of wheats is worth a couple bucks, if I were you I'd start a lincoln wheat collection,
the favorite of many, many collectors.

The roll you have is probably worth about a buck fifty. Most dealers pay 3 cents per common wheat, some buyers will pay closer to 5 or 6 cents per. Which is great turn around for you if you really wanted to.

I would suggest going out and getting a folder to collect all of the dates and mint marks. There are some really tough ones, and you most likely won't find them all in circulation, especially in BU or MS examples. The lincoln series is a fun one to collect and not that expensive. 25 bucks gets you 2500 pennies at the bank.

Check out the "Cool lincoln cents roll finds" thread and I think you will be hooked.

Agreed! The coins are not worth alot, only as it gives you enjoyment. Get a folder and start a collection. I started as a boy collecting Lincolns and Wheat cents.
