The ebay auction listed this as, and I bought this as, a Philadelphia 1862 Seated Liberty quarter.

But when I took some pictures of it after receiving it, I saw (what appears to me) to the hint of an S under the eagle claws on the reverse (meaning a San Francisco mint).

FYI: Philadelphia minted 932,000 quarters this year and SF minted 67,000.

So... Tell me what you think, please...

I'm going to say no based on the examples I'm seeing.. The S is REALLY large for the mintmark.. The questionable S on yours doesn't appear to be the same size.

There could be multiple sized S mint marks for this date.. But the only ones I've seen are the large variety.

You are most definitely correct! Nice, quick call on this one!

Until you mentioned this, I hadn't even thought about checking ebay for examples and of course, there are about 6 of them on there ALL with your example of an ENORMOUS "S" mm.

maprince230 rules!

(Just on an off chance: Has anyone heard of a smaller "S" mm for this year? (I would suspect not with only 67,000 examples...))

From what I've seen on these, it could have been altered, then someone might've tried to take it off upon that realazation... Just an opinion...

From the photographs you have provided I can't seem to see an S. Is there any way you could submit additional photographs of the "S" mint mark?

When I looked at my 1862 S Seated Liberty HALF DOLLAR, the mint mark looked the same as the "phantom S" on the Quarter. (Maybe that's what I was thinking...)

Yeah, make it a half, and I can see the S being right :)

The small s sure looks more normal for the series than the large S.. I can definitely see you getting exicted about it. When I went to ebay to look, I was looking for position of the S, not size.. I was surprised to see how big it was.
