Not counting the RPMs why is there so many more die varities and errors in Philadelphia mint than Denver or Sanfrancisco? Who mints the Philly coins?

Who Mints the Philly Coins? Mostly acid-fried hippies.

On a serious note, 1913-V- your question poses an interesting question, many of us have thought about.

In a related issue- I've noticed an inordinate amount of my customers and friends are die variety enthusiasts in the PA area. Is this chance, or does the more plentiful circulation-find area spawn obsessed variety collectors?

I'm not sure I have an answer as to why the majority of significant varieties come, not just from the Philly mint, but are released in the Philly area.

There are many varieties which are known to have been released in certain areas- many, I know are found today in the greater Philly area- this includes many of the best 2006 and 1972 doubled dies.

If people want to be flippant- here's your answer. Perhaps, without a mintmark, the Philly coin room suffered from RPM envy.

Ok, no more guesses or jokes.

I'd really be interested in hearing other's perspectives. I wouldn't be surprised if this thread can accumulated enough insight from members to solve the riddle.

Great question '13-V! I'm going to look forward to reading what others think.

I believe the reason why there are more known die varieties on Philly minted coins is because there are not only more coins minted there, thus more dies, but there are FAR more collectors searching their change near the East coast.

I can understand that reasoning. Can you shed any light on why there are over 30 documented doubled die obverses for the Philadelphia mint in 2006, and to the best of my knowledge, no DDOs from the Denver mint.

I'm not picking points- I'm trying to understand.

Probably dually because there aren't nearly as many die hard searchers in the Denver district and the fact that Denver has its own die shop and probably doesn't run into the same problems that Philly does. Just conjecture with no supporting facts, but it makes sense.

Why do they constantly recall Toyotas for gas pedal problems, yet Ford seems to make gas pedals without issues? Different factories that use different machinery.
