We all know about the current "national debt ceiling" debate and everything else....

According to history, the USA Government was once "Debt Free".... so here's a 3 part contest:

1) Under what President was the USA Government become "Debt Free"?
2) What year(s) was "Debt Free" period began and for how long?
3) What was the President's approach/solution to get the USA Government out of debt? Be specific (not just "cut spending" or "raise tax" blah blah blah)....

This contest will concluded when all three parts are answered correctly.

Here're the prizes:
a) If you answer one part right, you will receive 1x 1950s era LWC in MS condition.
b) If you answer two parts right, you will receive 1x 1940s era LWC in MS condition.
c) If you answer all 3 parts right, you will receive 1x 1930s era LWC in MS conditon
d) Bonus prize: If this contest concluded before I reach my home's computer (in about 3 hrs) then each person who posted a reply will receive a "82-D Large Date MS Zinc cent".

Some ground rule:
You can't repeat other's answer (ie: only one right answer total per part = the first person to answer right will win the prize for that part's question). Which mean, if someone answer part 1 right then the maximum prize remain is "answer two parts right". So the "grand prize" (all 3 parts right) only happen if you get all three parts answered right before anyone else.

Side note: These prize coins (beside the 82-D Small Date Zinc cent) are LWC saved by a collector back in the 60s or earlier (forgot the detail, need to get home to verify) and was put into these small paper pouch as changes for the Church ..... I'll post some pictures when I get home..... any ways, they are all nice MS, some with very nice toning.

1) Andrew Jackson
2) 1834 - 1836 (3 years)
3) blocking spending bills was a big part of it. Selling off govt land was another cornerstone.

Andrew Jackson
1835 - 1836
Blocked every spending bill & sold off western land. Actually generated a surplus. (which led to crazy state expenditures and 6 years of depression, but you can't have everything)

edit: uh.. in other words, -- everything Wei Fun said!

Solution... to sell government land in payment of gold and silver, which eventually led to a sort of depression considering the land market was a bubble that was ready to burst already...

1.) Andrew Jackson 2.) National debt eliminated in 1835 and only lasted from 1835-1837, a period of 2 years and was followed by a financial crisis

I think I know #3: Jackson had the gov't sell a lot of land and property, which brought in increased revenue, he raised tariffs, and shot down the national bank.

Isn't it sad that the United States has not been debt free since the Jackson administration in 1835! Yes he sold some American property but he hated and killed the national bank, how have our banks done for us lately? From the era came some great coinage. The steam press gave way to reeded edge coins and from 1836-1839 there were four different varieties of half dollar, and who wouldn't want to have a Gobrecht dollar!

1) Andrew Jackson
2) 1835 & 1836
3) Andrew Jackson achieved a $0 National Debt by refusing to authorize an additional National Bank, made settlers pay for land acquisitions in actual gold and silver (PM!), and cut federal spending.

That was fast lol. I was on my way home after lunch to answer. Opps too late hehe. I thought we were only debt free for a few days in 1835 and had a very nominal size debt during the close of 35 and 36. Either way, still debt free those two years in my mind.

Now, the result:

Darth Anarchus got the first 2 parts right.
Wei Fun got the last part right. ***ONly 3 mins latter***

Technically Darth Anarchus will be the only one to win the 1940s era LWC in MS condition prize but since I like Wei Fun answer to the 3rd part. I will also give Wei Fun the same prize.

Here are the pictures of the two prizes. Darth Anarchus will have the first choice (either the left or the right coin):
National-Debt-Contest
National-Debt-Contest

The package was sealed long ago and I didn't open either so I don't know the condition of each coin inside. I only based off of the handwriting of the person (which is accurate, based on other similar package that I've opened).... one thing for sure is that they will be toned (sulfur from the paper bag).... SO: each of you will carry half of the package.

Here's my intended grand prize, which I will have to hold on for the time being:
National-Debt-Contest
National-Debt-Contest

The rest of the responders will receive one 82-D Small Date MS Zinc cent (more valuable than LD though - mis-posted - sorry).

Everyone please email me your mailing address.

I feel happy today (did my tax on time this year).....

wolf-n-wa: Yeah, these guys are quick. I am wondering if they remembered their HS history or they just listened to NPR like me this morning..... Btw, since you've posted before my final instruction, but after my "contest closed", you will have to send me $0.41 postage cost for your coin.... hehehehe .... j/k. I got your address.

As a note to everyone, I really want to buy the set of ATB from APMEX so if I get a confirmed purchase from them, I will throw another contest. SO, keep checking back in a couple days or so.
