Let me start by saying I am not an avid collector, but since I was a kid, it has been a habit to watch for silver coins, quarters and dimes in particular. I recently ran accross this 1999 New Jersey State Quarter with a P mint. Hopefully the picture quality is good enough for you to see that it does not seem to have the copper core.
I have been unable to find any information online about this quarter being made in silver anywhere except for the proofs from San Francisco. There has been information about some experimental planchets, but they have mostly been gold in color like the Susan B Anthony dollars. This does not appear to have any other color to it. I unfortunately do not have access to a scale that is accurate enough to weigh it to a tenth of a gram, and there is not a coin shop near me. Does anyone have any idea what I might be looking at, and would it be worth taking it somewhere to get looked at professionally and/or graded? Any idea of a possible value? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

If you drop it, how does it sound? guessing that it could be a silver quarter, but not sure if the P mint mark discounts that

Try the tissue test: put a tissue over the quarter and if it shows up white through the tissue, it is possibly silver. But to be absolutely certain, it has to be looked at professionally

It's possible that's it's one of those QVC platinum plated quarters. I've found a few of those in the past as well as a roll of the gold plated ones.....

It doesn't sound much different than a regular quarter, but maybe that's just the untrained ear. It definitely seems to be a little heavier. And it does appear white under a tissue. If it is silver, thisstill seems strange since there doesn't seem to be any record of silver coins being minted in Philadelphia, only in SF as a proof set. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

At least not metal ones. Rubber tips on the ends will be OK.

Hi,

It's been plated.....It probably was one of those sold on HVC. When the owner found out it was worthless, he or she probably spent it.

Thanks,
Bill
