Hey all. I'm visiting from the Canadian forum. I'm going to an estate auction in northern BC. They have some US coins there and I wanted to know when you stopped using silver in the coins... They have some half dollars...1950-1960 And several 5cents as early as 1906 Really hard to tell the grade from the auction photos, but when do US coins no longer contain silver? (In Canada its 1967). Thanks!

Last time US coins (quarter, dime, half-dollar) were made in silver was in 1964, then were switched to a clad of copper-nickel (for quarters and dimes) but some were made in 1965 (but dated 1964). Half dollars were continued to be made in 40% silver clad up till 1970, then switched to Copper nickel clad. Silver coins are still being made today for the silver proof sets.

silver (actually billon, 35%) nickels from 1942-1945 with a large p, d or s above the building are the only nickels with silver content.

non-"war" nickels from 1866-date are 75-25 copper/nickel.

Quote:40% found in halves in the 1965-1970 40% can also be found in Ike dollars from 1971-1976 Please note that all U.S. halves in this timeframe were 40% silver but very few (less than 5%) of the Ike dollars were 40% silver.

TwoCents, as for Canadian silver 1967 dimes and quarters, is it true that the only way to differentiate 50% vs. 80% is to weigh them on a scale?

deadmummy: This is a very difficult test, since the weights are almost identical (within tolerance of wear). An accurate specific gravity test is one of the few ways. A while back, someone here on CCF did an interesting analysis of ring tones, and as a result has a pretty reliable way of telling the difference.
The short story is that few people care enough and 1967 silver usually trades at 65%.

The US also had a silver 5 cent coin, the Half Dime, but they were last minted in 1873.

Quote:The US also had a silver 5 cent coin, the Half Dime, but they were last minted in 1873. Might as well mention our silver 3 cent pieces (1851-1873), and our short lived 20 cent pieces (1875-1878)
