My wonderful father in law has just given me my first gold coin. A 1950 1 Guinea from Saudi Arabia. He picked it up in the UK in 1970 for $20 and it has sat in a drawer ever since. It is exactly the same size and composition as an English Sovereign. Edited by markn 10/16/2006 06:22 am

A very nice coin indeed. Well you are one up on me. I don't have any gold coins yet. Steve

Well when my wife saw the glint in my eye when I got this one she quickly warned me not to expect to get another any time soon.

I would love to, but at the moment, the budget is so tight that even the 1/10th OZ are not affordable. Steve

That is a real beaut! I remember when I got my first gold coin. It was a Canadian ML 1 oz, about 1983. I felt "rich"! I ended up selling it but, have since then collected U.S. and Canada gold and am feeling a bit like a miner in the 1859 Gold Rush! Silver is beautiful but, there's just something about the glitter of gold! Now it's time for platinum but, like you, the budget won't allow it - yet!
Congrats on your gift!

Nice coin! I like the simplicity, yet complexity of Arabic gold (... did this make sense to anyone else other than me? ... ) My first gold coin, also my first collected coin, is what got me into numismatics in the first place. When I was in Iraq, I bought one from a local interpreter with a bust of Saddam on it. When I came home, I wanted to find out what it was. Alas, my numerous searches came-up empty. It turned out to be a commemorative medal, without denomination, commemorating Iraqi Air Force jubilee. The search for history and information behind this medal ignited something inside and I have been collecting coins ever since :) Oh, here's the culprit:

That's a great story TwoKopeiki! Turns out the father in law spent $20US on this coin (which was $15AUD back then). If only he'd had $500 in his pocket!
