Gas bubbles are unlikely - Morgans are alloy, not layered - but pitting is generally found on the reverse rather than obverse. I'm inclined to think this is something post-mint, or a wierd planchet (unlikely) because of how extentive the damage is, but it deserves further examination.

Can you get closer pics of the pitted area somehow?
