Just to let those who care know I am back home for a week or two while some holes in the bottom of the vessel I was working on are repaired. Coins and Currency from the Congo where "Confiscated" by customs on exiting the country. I will attempt to pick up some more when I go back and this time not have them in my pocket when I leave. I don't want to make any more contributions to the local police slush fund.

Glad you are getting a breather on U.S. soil. Nothing like a little time at home to reflect and catch up!

So it's unlawful to remove Coins and Currency from the Congo? That's too bad! They have some nice coinage! Better "luck" next time! Do they search checked luggage too? Glad that you're on home soil for a while!

Hi nohope587, welcome back for a quick "picker-upper" in the U.S.A., I guess if they (customs) took your coins and currency, they are a bit more strict than the normal customs people. Were the coins made of precious metal by chance or just ordinary metal products? Take care Richard, Berry

Might be a good idea to have two stashes of local currency next time you exit the country: one hidden in your suitcase (or wherever) and one as a "diversion" to give to the customs folk as a token of your esteem and patronage. Always worked for me. Customs got their pound of flesh to support their families in the manner to which they would like to become accustomed while I kept what I really wanted.

Missed hearing from you, so this came as a surprise. Good to have you back in the good old USA. Don't suppose there is a chance of getting a boat without such a thin hull that it don't develope leaks. Be sure and take a good life preserver on the return trip.

The vessel ran over an uncharted wreck on leaving the Harbour at Point Noire. Hence the holes. luckily the water was shallow enough that even if the ship had sunk I would have been high and dry on the bridge. As it was a couple of storage tanks got flooded. As for Customs there is no rule about removing currency from the Congo but the Airport at Point Noire is run by the local police every one is physically searched on entering the airport and the police will confiscate anything they think that they can get away with. Normally if you start complain loudly and draw attention to yourself they will give up. This time however they seemed to be much more open about just taking what they want than in the past. Its had over the money or you don't fly.

I've always wondered about that stuff about some countries not allowing coins or currency to leave the country. Why would they care? If in small amounts it sure couldn't hurt their precious economy. What is even stranger is at international coin shows I've seen signs saying it was against the law in this or that country to take their money out and here it is for sale.
