Hi guys. I hope I came to the right place for finding answers to a long time question I have for my Philippine coins - what serifs were used in the design, particularly for the mintmarks. I've read there are various serifs used for mintmarks on USA coins - ball serif, straight serif, trumpet tail serif, etc etc.

Guys if you are knowledgeable about the serifs used for the 1903-1912 series USA-Philippines coins, it would be big big help for me identifying INVERTED MINTMARKS on my small collection.

Please share.

Hello nic. thank you. I'm interested in finding a list (and pictures) of the serifs (or fonts) used for the mintmarks in the 1903-1912 US-PI territorial coins. I've just read in a reference that it will be easy to identify inverted mintmarks if you know what serifs were used. :-) There are various serifs I see through a loupe I just don't know if they are "normal". And it is kinda hard taking photos, too, cos the mintmarks are too small. :-)

Book by Baldo on the 1903 to 1912 coin series are available at 2nd floor Uniwide Complex at San Juan City, along the antique shops, sells at about $8.00

Also check on the latest RedBook on USA coins, the entire series is in there

As for inverted mintmarks? I havent seen any, except the nearest is the "M" for Manila mint mark starting in 1921 which is 30 degrees off the Eagles horizontal plane.

So I'm kinda curious what is meant by an "inverted" mintmark

Perhaps others can chime in... I'm rather weak on mintmark orientations

Thank you Nic. I am new to inverted mintmarks, too. I have checked my albums on Philippine coins and found several double dies. They are quite easy to identify. I even found a 1903 peso with repunched date (or double date?), very very vivid doubling on all the numerals. hahaha I was so surprised myself. I am on with the inverted "S" mintmark. :-) It's a lot harder to identify. I've read I have to know the normal serifs first. :-)
