So I've wanted a Henning Nickel for a while (counterfeit nickel produced by Francis LeRoy Henning of Erial, New Jersey in 1954). I saw one on ebay about a year ago, I bid about $80, but it went about $120. I've seen people ask to buy them here, but they don't seem to get many people offer to sell one. Seems that those who have them hold onto them. They are tough to find because not many people know to look for them. Indeed, it all supports Francis Henning's original strategy -- no one looks at nickels. So I've searched a few boxes on nickels, I've asked around, but no luck. Every once in a while, I search ebay or poke around the internet. Then last week, a quick search turned up a seller on "bonanza" who had a Henning Nickel for $20.99. I was a little nervous since I'd never heard of this site, but I placed my order and anxiously waited. Then it arrived... the fake... er, the real fake... the authentic fake? Here it is:

Nice purchase. Let's hope the demand doesn't get so great that we have to start worrying about counterfeit counterfeit nickels.

So, it's OK to own and sell a counterfeit, as long as you don't mis-represent it? I ask as I have a gold coin that I know is counterfeit, and I've been thinking of taking it to Cash for Gold, or maybe the local coin dealer, to sell. Wasn't sure if it would get seized, or something.

that is my understanding, jackb. There's no intent to use it for commerce, and the quantities are low. The Henning that sold on ebay had its listing pulled a couple of times before the seller worked out the right wording. So your coin is real gold, but it not a real mint coin? cool

Some discussion on whether or not they are legal: http://www.cointalk.com/t83965/This one is pretty interesting given that in this case the counterfeit is worth multiples of the real coin... No one will be trying to pass it off as a real coin!

Your nickel is in decent condition. It is hard to find them with a full rim and your coin almost has a full rim. Is that a die crack I see across the reverse?

Quote: HHHmmmm food for thought, todays Chinese Morgans could be tomorrows Henning nickels The only thing that makes these worth anything is the mystique about them and that they circulated for so long without detection and he may have never gotten caught if he had put a MM on the coin when the US Mint did or just stay away from those years all together in his production. The Chinese Morgans were never meant to do anything but deceive collectors, never meant to circulate. So they will never be worth anything but a headache for future collectors

Yeah, that's a nice counterfeit.. Is that always the case with the Hennings that there is a hole in the 'R'? except for the missing letter of course.
