What would cause this? I took this out of circulation in 2004 from a bank roll.

I don't think it's a plating issue, it's in the same location on both sides....

First things first...

Quarters are not plated. This term assumes that molten metal is placed onto a planchet and let cool to harden. This is how zinc cents are plated.

Quarters are 'clad' - this is the process of taking a sheet of copper and applying a sheet of nickel on each side with extreme pressure bonding the three sheets together to make a big metal sandwich.

Simply put...your coin is just damaged.

How would this "damage" occur? Wouldn't the letters be damaged as well?

Maybe it's blood from the victim in a robbery!! or maybe just Dad getting wood stain on it when he's staining his fence and decides to buy an ice cream from Dickie Dee and doesn't wipe his hands first before paying....

Who knows? It just isn't "mint" damage.

I never said anything about it being "Mint Damage" The top layer of the coin is gone. Its almost like it was plated and the plated part came off...there is nothing on the coin. It is the underneath the nickle that is showing...maybe my pictures aren't showing it good enough...

Sorry... Both pics look different (see the color of the 2X2). The first has a strong yellow cast over it. It's difficult to determine what you have from the pics. You have it in hand and can see the difference, for us, we're just using the images. Try using just natural daylight for your shots. Mid-day light would be best (morning will give a blue cast and evening will give a reddish cast).

I'm really curious to see what you're seeing.

Maybe I am not understanding you guys. Nothing is on this coin...the dark part is the metal underneath they shiney part. I was wondering what could cause this damage that would remove the surface of the quarter but not damage any of the lettering. Here hopefully is a picture better showing the damage.

Nothing has been removed, that is why the lettering is still intact. The coin has suffered environmental damage/staining- the last pic shows it best.
